Abstract

Sustainable urban development integrates smart city technologies to create resilient, inclusive, and environmentally friendly urban ecosystems. This abstract explores how digital innovations address rapid urbanization challenges while aligning with global sustainability goals. Smart cities leverage Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and renewable energy systems to optimize urban functions like mobility, energy use, and waste management. Sustainable urban development prioritizes reducing carbon emissions, enhancing resource efficiency, and promoting social equity, often guided by UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 for sustainable cities. Key dimensions include smart governance, economy, mobility, environment, people, and living, as seen in global models like Singapore’s integrated sensor networks or Barcelona’s energy-efficient street lighting. Digital infrastructure such as 5G networks, AI-driven traffic management, and smart grids enable real-time data analytics for predictive maintenance and demand-responsive services. Citizen participation via mobile apps fosters inclusivity, empowering residents in decision-making and reducing digital divides. India’s Smart Cities Mission, launched in 2015, targets 100 cities with initiatives like Pune’s command centers for flood management and Varanasi’s waste-to-energy plants, blending cultural preservation with tech upgrades. In Europe, the EU’s Horizon programs emphasize interoperability standards to avoid siloed systems, while East Asian hubs like Seoul use AI for air quality monitoring.
