As emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, the internet of things (IoT), cloud computing, quantum computing, 5G networks, and cybersecurity solutions, continue to advance at a rapid pace, they are transforming both the global economy and the geopolitical landscape. Emerging technologies will continue to be critical enablers of sustainable development and key drivers of national security and international competitiveness. Increasingly, governments, businesses, and institutions around the world are leveraging digital innovation as a means to support productivity improvements, foster effective governance, enhance resilience against cyber threats, and meet their objectives for sustainable growth. This paper reviews the role of emerging technologies in supporting economic development; enhancing security frameworks; and improving competitiveness on a global scale by analysing existing literature and current trends. The study identifies the associated opportunities and challenges associated with the adoption of emerging technologies through qualitative methods. The research suggests that strategic investment in digital
infrastructure, innovation ecosystems and cybersecurity will be essential for nations looking to lead in an increasingly digital world order.
