The Blue Economy, which encompasses both the ocean and maritime sectors, is quickly becoming an important force for job creation and technological advancement in a sustainable way. This paper analyses how startups can help change existing maritime industries; details the key enablers and inhibitors of entrepreneurs’ success; and provides policy, funding and ecosystem support frameworks
for use by governments and private sector investors. The findings indicate that blue startups have the potential to respond to many of the environmental challenges we currently face, promote equitable economic development and create the conditions for coastal countries to be leaders in future ocean based industries.
