Abstract

A newer and more sustainable framework for creating economic opportunities offshore is called Blue Economy while providing environmental protection and ensuring social inclusion. Within this broader framework of sustainability is maritime logistics and port (supply-chain) operations; both are critical elements for facilitating Blue Trade. However, traditional systems used by ports are plagued by inefficiencies, congestion, disproportionate costs, as well as unintentional negative environmental externalities. The development of smart ports characterized by the use of data analytics, digital technologies, and intelligent systems has transformed the way maritime logistics operates (making them more operationally efficient, more transparent and more sustainable). This research paper will analyze the role of smart ports in adding value to Blue Trade through a data-centered research approach. Using a conceptual and analytical research design, the research will look at how integrating data combines with digital infrastructures and the application of analytics allows for improved logistics performance, reduced environmental impacts associated with naval transportation, and support for sustainable trade practices in the future. The paper also will address potential barriers and challenges to smart port development and discuss potential future development pathways.
